You may be used to eating three meals a day and snacks. This is quite common. With intermittent fasting, you can eat as much as you want, but here’s the catch: you have to stay

. So there are scheduled periods when you can eat and others when you intermittently fast.
Unlike other diets, intermittent fasting tells you when to eat, not what to eat. And many say it can help lead to better health and a longer life. Does that sound interesting? Let’s dive into Intermittent Fasting 101. Types of Intermittent Fasting
Most weight loss diets work by reducing the number of calories consumed. Intermittent fasting does the same thing, but in a different way. This way of eating restricts calories (requires fasting) for a certain period of time (intermittent) and provides little or no restriction the rest of the time.
In short, intermittent fasting is basically skipping meals on a regular basis, sometimes daily, weekly or even monthly. Here are some popular approaches to Intermittent Fasting 101:

Probably the most popular method of intermittent fasting. With 16:8 IF, you fast for 16 hours and then eat for 8 hours a day. Many people choose this method because it is one of the simplest and easiest to implement.
Most people who do 16:8 meals skip breakfast and break their fast at lunch. For example, they ate their first meal at 11 a.m. and ate until 7 p.m., creating an 8-hour feeding window. Other people may choose any early feeding period, such as 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Eat regularly five days a week, then limit yourself to no more than 600 calories a day on the other two days (usually not consecutively). You achieve this by eating very little and drinking only water or calorie-free drinks during these two fasting days.
Eat normally one day and only a minimal amount of calories the next day; Alternate “holiday” days and “fast” days every other day.

With intermittent fasting, you restrict calories for several days in a row, and on all other days you eat unlimited meals. For example, fasting for five days a month.
In addition to this type of intermittent fasting, another approach, the Prolon Fasting Mimicking Diet (FMD), is gaining popularity to prevent disease and promote weight loss.
Studies have shown that intermittent fasting can help with weight loss. However, success is similar to other diets. So, similar – not necessarily better.
Overall, research on the effects of intermittent fasting on human health is still emerging as to whether it can prevent disease or slow aging in some people in addition to weight loss.

Most studies on calorie restriction and intermittent fasting have been done in cells (eg, yeast), rodents, and even monkeys. Some, but not all, of these studies show that fasting helps increase exercise endurance, immune function, and longevity. It also appears to help reduce the risk of diabetes, heart disease, some cancers, and Alzheimer’s disease.

When it comes to clinical trials (in humans) of intermittent fasting, most have been fairly short – a few months or less. But so far we know it can help with markers of inflammation (C-reactive protein), diabetes (blood glucose levels and insulin resistance), fat burning/loss, and help lower high blood pressure and cholesterol.
When it comes to weight loss, intermittent fasting seems to work just as well, if not better, than other diets. Researchers believe that eating like this reduces appetite

What about extending people’s lifespans? These studies haven’t been done yet, so we don’t know the effects of intermittent fasting on our lives.
When we eat too few calories, we use up stored carbohydrates called glycogen. The liver stores enough glycogen for 12 to 16 hours before running out of fuel. After 16 hours, the body switches fuel and starts using fat as an energy source.
During this time, the metabolism switches from burning carbohydrates to burning fat. Some fats are directly used as fuel, while some are metabolized into biochemicals called
. The state of ketosis causes other changes in the body that may underlie some of the health benefits seen with some types of fasting.

Ketones are a more efficient source of energy for our body than glucose, so they keep many of our cells functioning even during fasting. This is especially true for brain cells and may be part of why some animal studies show protection against age-related declines such as Alzheimer’s disease.
Ketones may also help prevent cancer and inflammatory diseases such as arthritis. They also lower the amount of insulin in the blood, which can help protect against type 2 diabetes.
At the molecular level, intermittent fasting can extend life in animals through effects on genetic DNA. It appears that calorie restriction in animals can slow age-related changes and help them live longer.
All told, most people who follow the 16:8 Intermittent Fasting Diet plan do not enter ketosis. Thus, the weight loss benefits are attributed primarily to calorie intake, while the overall health benefits can be attributed to lower blood sugar and insulin levels.

If you want to try an intermittent fasting diet plan, the first step is to determine if you’re a good candidate. Then check with your doctor before trying intermittent fasting if any of these conditions apply to you: pregnancy or breastfeeding, diabetes or hypoglycemia, low blood pressure, eating disorders (or history), weight loss, amenorrhea, or trying to conceive . Certain medicines (eg diuretics for high blood pressure) and/or if you are under 18 years of age.

Keep an eye out for possible side effects when you start intermittent fasting. This can include fatigue, weakness, headaches, decreased sexual interest, and a decreased ability to maintain body temperature in cold environments. Many of these side effects are temporary, but if they last more than a week or two, consider stopping intermittent fasting for a while and see if your symptoms improve.
It is also important to assess whether intermittent fasting is helping you achieve your health goals. At least initially, consider keeping a journal to use during your intermittent fasting journey. Things to track can include mood, energy levels, blood sugar, blood pressure, and weight (I recommend measuring your waist instead of weighing yourself as a way to track fat loss). This will help you decide whether intermittent fasting is a good strategy for your long-term health.
The main reason for any dietary change is to create a sustainable and healthy lifestyle that will help you achieve your health goals. Whether you’re trying to lose weight or prevent disease, intermittent fasting is one way of eating that may work for you.
The most important thing with any diet is to get all the essential macro and micronutrients, the right amount of food and fiber for a healthy gut microbiome and long term enjoyment of your lifestyle.

You may have to do a little experiment to see what it is.
As already mentioned, if you have diabetes (type 1 or type 2), you should consult your doctor before breaking the fast. One small study looked at 3 men who had type 2 diabetes for 10-25 years. They fasted alternate days or intermittently under medical supervision and could stop taking insulin after 1.
