If I Don T Sweat During A Workout – You hear the old adage “let’s work out and sweat it out” all the time, like sweating is a sign you’ve had a good and productive workout. But what if you work out and don’t really break a sweat during your workout? Was that training the reason for the failure? Does that mean you’re not exercising long enough or hard enough to make it a productive workout?
Let’s dig into the facts here and dispel popular myths about why you sweat and how it relates to exercise.
If I Don T Sweat During A Workout
Your body is like a never-ending engine, and like all engines, it generates heat. The more the muscles contract, the more heat is generated. If your body can’t keep you cool, you’ll overheat and collapse within 20 minutes.
Why Am I So Tired During Exercise?
The first is radiation. If the air around you is cooler than your body, the heat radiates out of your skin. The second method is conduction, which is heat transfer through direct contact, such as swimming in a cold pool, where the water absorbs your body heat. The third way is convection, the moving air that cools us like you’re standing in front of a fan or the wind blows over you. The final method is evaporation, where the water in our blood absorbs heat and rises to the surface of the skin through the sweat glands so it can evaporate creating a cooling effect.
In colder conditions, you don’t need to sweat as much because your body uses radiation to cool you down. In warm conditions, sweating is the main way to cool down because the air is warmer than your body, but if it’s wet, sweat can’t evaporate, so you’ll see sweat dripping off you. Since sweat doesn’t evaporate under these conditions, your body uses radiation and convection (remember moving air?) to cool itself.
Everyone has different sweating patterns. Gender, age, fitness level and environment can all affect how much you sweat. Women seem to sweat less and start sweating at higher temperatures than men. People tend to sweat less as they age, and therefore cannot cope with the heat as well as younger people, but reduced fitness levels may have something to do with it. In laboratory experiments involving young and old people at similar levels of fitness, there was no significant difference in their sweating processes.
If you work out in an air-conditioned room or outside during the cooler part of the year, you won’t sweat as much because the cold air evaporates the sweat more quickly and also prepares your body to use more radiation method, which means your body can more easily cope with the heat generated by exercise. That doesn’t mean you don’t burn as many calories, since the intensity and duration of exercise determines how many calories you burn, not how much you sweat. You’ve been sweating, but you just can’t see it because it’s been steaming.
Does Sweating Burn Calories?
If the more you sweat, the more calories you burn while exercising, and you burn more calories sitting and sweating in a hot, humid room, but that’s clearly not the case. What you’ll see like sweat is just due to indoor conditions that don’t allow evaporation to cool the body.

We have good news: According to Northwestern Medicine sports medicine specialist Dr. Sand Rubin, sweating actually doesn’t have much to do with the amount of calories you burn. “Sweating is a better indicator of thermoregulation than calories burned,” he said. You shouldn’t measure how hard you’re working by how much you sweat, he explains. It has more to do with your environment (whether it’s hot or humid where you’re exercising) and how much sweat your body needs to regulate your temperature, which is different for everyone.
Workout Plans That Don’t Make You Sweat
In other words: “It’s absolutely possible to lose weight during exercise without breaking a sweat,” says Dr. Rubin. What about weight loss as a direct result of sweating? We’ll use this as a reminder to rehydrate after a particularly sweaty workout. “Water weight” isn’t the kind of weight you really want to lose. Sweating profusely and failing to hydrate properly can lead to some horrible side effects, even if you’re only “mildly” dehydrated: You’ll feel tired, dizzy, constipated, and aches and pains from your joints and muscles to your head. Make sure to drink plenty of water before, after and during high-intensity workouts, especially if you’re exercising in hot and humid environments, adds Dr. Rubin. (Yes, it’s worth pausing your run or workout for a sip of water when you need to.)
Sweating is good (and natural), but don’t take it as a sign that a sweaty workout is a better sign than one that doesn’t leave you drenched.
