But for the 623,000 people nationwide who are members of Orangetheory Fitness, it’s the color of their fitness obsession.

You may have spotted an Orangetheory gym near you or noticed friends posting about Orangetheory Nation or OTF life. Studios are bathed in bright, vibrant colors and they seem to be everywhere these days. The first studio opened in Fort Lauderdale, Florida in 2010, and since then they have expanded to over 900 studios.

The one-hour workout is the brainchild of physiologist and Orangetheory co-founder Ellen Latham, who developed the Ultimate Workout to help people overcome their fitness levels.

Unlike other classes, exercise isn’t about how many push-ups you can do or how many miles you can run, but how hard you work.

Instead of everyone in the class doing the same thing, members do variations of the same workout while wearing heart rate monitors to track how hard their bodies are working.

A person’s heart rate is then ranked, based on age, to create what Orangetheory calls your “frequency number,” or exertion level. The numbers are displayed on the board, where members are encouraged to hit the “orange” zone with great effort.

“We want you to reach your goals and reward your efforts based on what you did in class,” said Michael Piermarini, Orangetheory’s director of fitness.

Class members spend about half of the 60 minutes on the treadmill either walking, running or jogging. The second half of the class is spent either on the rowing machine in the water or in the gym doing a series of movements such as squats, sit-ups or pull-ups. (Don’t worry, there are different options or mods for everyone.)

“The same training is being done in all 930 to 950 studios,” Piermarini said. “We’re constantly mixing up the design of the program.”

While the workout follows a rough format each day using a rowing machine, treadmill and gym floor, one workout is never exactly the same as the day before.

A group of about five certified trainers design more than 90 exercises each month that focus on different muscle groups. The exercises are then tested at home with members, approved and then marketed to the wider ‘Orange’ public.

Latham designed the training format to include people of all fitness levels, adding that inclusivity is one of the things that makes her training different.

“I knew I needed a low-impact way to put strength into my training and that high jumping wouldn’t be ideal for people with knee problems,” she told. “So I included water rowers (…) for the treadmill part, we have speed walkers, joggers, runners… we have every level.”

She got so many positive stories from clients who used her Orange Theory training that she started posting them online.

There are different membership levels: Basic (four classes for $59/month), Elite (eight classes for $99/month), and Premier (unlimited classes for $159/month). However, the price may vary by location, so call your nearest gym.

Things To Know Before Your First Orangetheory Fitness Class

Orangetheory hopes to create a community with its uniform workouts and challenging but friendly trainers. For more than half a million people, it works.

“The support from fellow Oranges and coaches/staff is something that is almost impossible to put into words… Winning beyond measure is even more rewarding,” wrote one member, Carissa C., who added that she was originally only supposed to be a member for a few months.

“Our members in Australia are talking to members in New York and Los Angeles because they trained on the same day. So I can talk about it and share my experiences. It makes them feel part of something bigger.” Welcome back to my blog and welcome if you’re new! One of my favorite types of posts to write is fitness exercises. I took a break from writing for most of quarantine, but studios near me are back open! Today’s post is about Orangetheory fitness.

Orangetheory is a group fitness class that focuses on 5 heart rate zones. Each class is a combination of rowing, cardio and strength training. Class participants wear a heart rate monitor and their statistics are displayed on a white board in the exercise room.

How To Get Stronger At Orangetheory Fitness: 3 Insider Tips

The premise of Orangetheory training is to earn at least 12 “points” per hour. You earn a point for every minute spent in the orange (unpleasant) or red (full) zone. Orangetheory claims that if you spend at least 12 minutes in the orange or red zone (84% or more of your maximum heart rate), you will benefit from the “afterburn” effect. They claim it gives you an increased metabolic rate for up to 36 hours after your workout, causing you to burn even more calories after class.

I was at the Guilford, Connecticut location. There are thousands of Orangetheory locations worldwide, so check their website to find the location closest to you.

The studio was really clean and nice looking. I was told to arrive 30 minutes early for my first class so I could be shown around and fitted with a heart rate monitor, as well as get an explanation of how the class works and what to expect.

The front desk staff and my trainer were super friendly and made sure all my questions were answered before I even started the class! As there is a lot going on during the class, we recommend that you arrive 30 minutes early. This will help minimize any confusion when the class actually starts.

I’m writing this review during the COVID-19 pandemic, so some aspects of my studio experience are different than they were before. Class sizes have been drastically reduced to ensure social distancing during training. Masks are required when entering and exiting the building, as well as when moving from one equipment to another. Wipes are supplied before each transition so that the equipment is disinfected before use. Classes were also 45 minutes long instead of the usual 60 at the time of writing (although they have since reverted to 60 minute classes).

The unlimited class option is $179 per month. The option that intrigued me the most is 8 lessons per month, which costs $119 (or $109 with a 6-month contract). Class packages are also available which significantly increase the rate per class.
